The Taxonomy Problem
Every mature site has taxonomy debt: duplicate categories that mean the same thing (“Tech” vs “Technology”), tags used once and abandoned, categories with hundreds of posts next to ones with three. This clutter hurts SEO, site navigation, and your ability to surface related content.
๐ง Tool: Studio Code โ AI-powered CLI for WordPress, built on Claude Code. Runs WP-CLI commands, analyzes site data, and makes bulk changes through conversational prompts. Learn more โ
Step 1: Audit Categories
In Studio Code (or Claude with MCP), ask:
Audit our categories:
1. List all categories with their post count
2. Flag categories with fewer than 3 posts (likely unused)
3. Find categories that seem like duplicates (similar names or descriptions)
4. Identify any categories that are children of the wrong parent
5. Show the full category hierarchy as a tree
Present this as a report with recommendations.
Step 2: Audit Tags
Now audit our tags:
1. How many total tags do we have?
2. How many tags have only 1 post? (these are almost always noise)
3. Find tags that overlap with category names (redundant)
4. List the top 20 most-used tags
5. Find tags that look like typos or variations of the same thing
(e.g., "AI", "A.I.", "artificial intelligence")
Recommend which tags to merge, delete, or keep.
Step 3: Clean Up (Carefully)
After reviewing the report, you can ask Studio Code to make changes:
Based on your audit:
1. Merge "Tech" and "Technology" โ keep "Technology" as the canonical term
2. Delete all tags used on only 1 post (list them first so I can review)
3. Move "Climate" under the "Science" parent category
Show me exactly what changes you'll make before executing them.
๐ก Tip: Always review taxonomy changes before applying them. Deleting a category moves all its posts to “Uncategorized” unless you specify a replacement. Studio Code/Claude will warn you about this โ listen to it.
โ Key Takeaway: Taxonomy audits are the kind of tedious-but-important work that AI handles brilliantly. Studio Code can analyze hundreds of categories and thousands of tags in seconds, then make surgical fixes you’d never have time for manually.
